Serving Suggestions

This syrup is perfect for daily enjoyment. To prepare it, mix 2 tablespoons of syrup with 300 ml of tonic water or your favourite tea. You can adjust the sweetness to your preference and add a squeeze of fresh lemon for extra flavour. For an added twist reminiscent of Coca-Cola, consider adding a shot of espresso. Serve it over ice for a refreshing start to your day or as a revitalising afternoon pick-me-up. Really.

The Origins of Cola: From Medicine to Modern Beverage

The original cola, created by Dr. John Pemberton in the late 19th century, was intended as a medicinal tonic for hangovers, headaches, and fatigue, marketed as a valuable brain tonic. It drew inspiration from Vin Mariani, a popular French coca wine. Pemberton's initial concoction used coca leaves and kola nuts, evolving into what we recognize today as Coca-Cola.

However, the historical context reveals a darker side. Pemberton, injured in the Civil War, developed a morphine addiction and sought treatment. The coca plant was seen as a potential cure for "morphinism," and its inclusion in Vin Mariani further influenced his formulation. Combining the coca plant with alcohol produces a more potent chemical, enhancing psychoactive effects.

While few associations of modern Coca-Cola relate to mental well-being, the original drink was indeed marketed as a "valuable brain tonic" and a "cure for all nervous affections," even with variations containing nerve-stimulant properties from the coca plant and kola nuts. Long after Pemberton's death in 1888, and after he had sold off his rights to the drink, The Coca-Cola Company phased out these nerve stimulants.

The Coca-Cola we know today, although cocaine was removed over 100 years ago, still contains a staggering amount of processed sugar. This, along with a lack of medicinal herbs, can lead to body inflammation and various health problems. Furthermore, Coca-Cola contains phosphoric acid, which interferes with calcium absorption, an essential mineral. Other ingredients often include high-fructose corn syrup, caffeine, "natural flavors," caramel color, and citric acid, a common additive derived from black mold (Aspergillus niger) fermentation.
