Fermented Jamu: A Modern Twist on a Traditional Herbal Tonic

Jamu is deeply rooted in Indonesian culture, a traditional herbal medicine made from natural ingredients like roots, bark, flowers, and fruits, often consumed fresh. I've always been fascinated by food preservation through fermentation, and I realized this method offers compelling benefits for Jamu, especially for turmeric.

Our wild-fermented Jamu goes beyond tradition. It significantly enhances the bioabsorption of curcumin, turmeric's active compound, which is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb. Fermentation breaks down cell walls, allowing microbes to produce enzymes that transform curcumin into more bioavailable forms. While piperine in black pepper, and fats aid absorption, fermentation adds another powerful layer!

This potent tonic is also naturally rich in beneficial bacteria and yeasts (probiotics). These live cultures support gut health, improve digestion, and can boost the immune system by modulating gut microbiota. Fermentation also creates other beneficial compounds, like gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), known for its calming effects, contributing to holistic wellness.

Beyond its health benefits, fermentation acts as a natural preservative, inhibiting the growth of spoilage microorganisms. This means longer storage and significantly extended shelf life, a huge plus for convenience!

Important note: This product is naturally fermented and may contain trace amounts of ethanol due to lactic acid bacteria. Those sensitive to ethanol, pregnant, nursing, or with dietary restrictions should consult a healthcare professional before consuming. It is unpasteurized and contains live cultures that may aid digestion but might not be suitable for individuals with compromised immune systems. Please consult your physician if you have any concerns.

Our Craft

We meticulously craft this tonic with fresh Turmeric (Curcuma longa), Ginger (Zingiber officinale), Lemongrass (Cymbopogon), Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), Tamarind preserves, Lemon, and Black Pepper (Piper nigrum). The process involves a wild turmeric 'bug' starter, allowing the brew to develop a unique depth of flavour.

Ginger root is a medicinal herb that contains bioactive terpenes. Due to its therapeutic effects, ginger is known to have antiemetic, antipyretic, anti-cough, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic, and anticancer properties.

Turmeric and ginger have long been recognised for their therapeutic and healing effects on illnesses affecting the bones in the feet and knees, including osteoarthritis.

Tasting Notes

Expect a pleasant tanginess and natural effervescence. Surprisingly, it has smelling notes of sweet orange and flora, followed by a satisfying spice kick at the first swallow.

Note on Carbonation: This ferment is naturally carbonated through the fermentation of the herbal tea; no carbonated water is added.

Recommendations

Ideal for daily enjoyment. Start with a small serving to allow your body to adjust to its potent probiotic content.
